Language Upskilling for the Primary Workforce
Date: 22nd of January 2010
Time: 10.00-12.30
Place: Nottingham Trent University, DICE Conference Room
The National Director for Languages, Lid King, in conjunction with Links into Languages and colleagues from CILT, hosted the Language Upskilling meeting in the East Midlands at Nottingham Trent University on the 22nd of January. He discussed how to take forward the development of courses for the language upskilling of primary teachers with representatives from Local Authorities, Higher Education and Adult Education Institutions.
Working with CILT, the National Centre for Languages and national experts from HE and the Primary sector, the National Director has overseen the development of a specification* which will be the basis for the development of upskilling courses for primary teachers.
The specification has been designed to respond to the broad needs of adult language learners and also includes many contexts specific to teaching and learning in primary schools. It will enable primary teachers and teaching assistants to develop as independent language users with a target competence between B1 and B2 on the Common European Framework Reference Levels. (This is equivalent to Higher GCSE-AS/A; Languages Ladder Intermediate to Advanced).
The aim now is to facilitate the development of partnerships which can deliver appropriate local courses. Such course delivery would be funded by the existing Standards funding for primary languages.
* The specification can be viewed here.
