A group of subject leaders got together at Aston University at the end of November to learn more about the renewed Key Stage 3 framework. Many of the participants are currently writing schemes of work for their school, and wanted to network with colleagues and learn more about the framework.
Who better to deliver the course than Fiona Cotton, who has been involved in the consultation phase and initial training of the renewed framework, and was also part of the piloting of the current framework? Through the lively discussions Fiona was able to guide each of the participants to write their future action plans.
The participants recognised the change from teacher centred to learner and skills based thinking, and agreed that it is good to start with small and concentrate on one of the five strands at a time. "Dividing the work between clusters and/or colleagues is also important so that one person doesn't have to do all the work".
The course offers support with the National Strategies website, where the renewed Key Stage framework can be found. On the site you can download the yearly learning objectives, as well as the exemplification for the objectives. Guidance on how to make the most of the framework is also available.
The site also offers eLearning modules for professional development of language teachers and subject leaders.
