The European Award for Languages recognises original ways of improving the quality of language teaching, motivating students and effectively utilising available resources.
The Award
It is a Europe-wide initiative supported by the European Commission. CILT, the National Centre for Languages, is the UK coordinator of the initiative which has recognised over one thousand innovative projects across Europe. Projects applying for a UK Award can involve any language (other than English) and must be UK based.
Prizes
In addition to the European Label, which can be used on corporate stationery, winners receive books, vouchers or teaching resources from a range of sponsors. All winners also receive a certificate signed by the European Commissioner for Education and Culture. The Awards are presented at a ceremony in the summer.
Special prizes are given to the best projects involving Spanish, Italian, French and German, as well as primary languages, the innovative use of technology, and languages for business.
Each year one of the winning projects is selected by the Mary Glasgow Language Trust to receive its annual award of £2,000.
Application
Entry for the 2010 Awards is now open. Applications are invited from schools, colleges, universities, businesses and other institutions engaged in foreign language initiatives, which are pioneering, productive and replicable. The application deadline is 31st January 2010 and applicants will be informed by the end of March whether or not their project has been shortlisted.
To apply online visit the applications section of the CILT website.
