The Open School for Languages (MYLO) is a new online learning tool designed to encourage young people to engage with languages in an innovative way. The languages covered include French, Spanish, German, and Mandarin. Aimed at Key Stage 3, it will engage learners in the class setting and independently via a range of activities that have been designed to make languages more tangible.
MYLO aims to help more young people discover the relevance and value of languages by promoting language learning and maintaining their interest. The service provided will equip teachers with a variety of original and captivating techniques for connecting students both in and out of the classroom.
At the heart of the MYLO experience is a range of contextualised challenges designed to highlight the real-world relevance of language learning. Challenges will be centred on open productive tasks providing opportunities for learners to engage with languages through topics such as music, sport and film. As they explore, learners are introduced to new vocabulary and structures and encouraged to develop their existing language skills.
MYLO is due to be launched in March 2010, but there’s a sneak preview of the site at www.mylo.dcsf.gov.uk. Here, you can sign up for the newsletter, register your school and sample one of the activities.
