Aston University was the location for the first Links into Languages one-day workshop last month looking at strategic leadership for languages in primary schools.

The University acts as the Links’ Regional Centre for the West Midlands offering a nationally co-ordinated network of support centres. Training, meetings, networking and access to resources will all be located at Aston University, helping to bring together all those working with languages in the region.

The course, aimed at head teachers and subject coordinators, consisted of two modules. The morning module looked at curriculum delivery and explored the role of the subject coordinator; teachers were given assistance in activity ideas and planning. The afternoon module addressed self evaluation in developing primary languages and what Ofsted is looking for in terms of expectations and achievement.

Noemi Martinez Ramos, Languages Community Coordinator at Rugby High School was one of the attendees, “This has been a great networking opportunity for all of us. The University has a fantastic new languages block and the course has been very useful with great ideas for me to take back to my school.”

Satu Raitala, Regional Manager for Links into Languages commented, “The programme aims to offer continuous professional development for teachers. We want to try and bring academic expertise and teachers closer together, and offer teachers opportunities for networking and this first workshop has been a great success.”
