"Links South East has a busy summer term"

Region: South East [More South East news...]

Links South East has been looking back at the first term of activity. Based at the University of Southampton's Avenue Campus, Links South East started off the summer programme with a briefing from the Languages Company. Held on 5th June at the University, Lid King, the National Director for Languages, along with Kate Green and Jo Peach gave an update on the picture of languages to delegates that attended from across the South East region. Also speaking were Carmel O'Hagan from CILT, the National Centre for Languages, and Samia Earle, from SSAT, who talked about Links' own training courses starting in September 09.

Two other events took place at the University later in the term. On 25th June, a New Secondary Curriculum event was well attended. A co-badged event with the Association of Language Learning (ALL), Kate Scappaticci, a regional subject adviser in the South East for ALL, led the 15 delegates through a busy session with lots of ideas to take back to the classroom. On 2nd July, the University hosted the Southampton Primary Languages conference, a co-badged event with Southampton City Council. The day was filled many workshops, and key highlights included the keynote speech from the Language Company's Jo Peach and local Year 3 pupils performing a play in Spanish.

Links South East was also very pleased to co-badge five other events across the region this term. Throughout June, two primary languages events with Hampshire County Council took place, one focusing on language and one focusing on methodology. On 29th June, Links South East had a stand and a workshop slot at the "Leading World Languages" event at Hove Park School, in Brighton and Hove, while on 30th June, Links had a slot in the main programme to talk about Links at the "Languages Let Loose" conference in Maidstone, with Kent and Medway local authorities and Canterbury Christchurch University. The last event of the term was on 6th July in Cowes, on the Isle of Wight, when delegates gathered for KS2 framework training.
