A group of H.E. experts, training providers, local authority advisers and teachers came together to discuss the upskilling of the primary workforce in a meeting organised by Links into Languages and the Languages Company. Dr Lid King and Carmel O'Hagan from CILT led the meeting on the new specification on primary upskilling, with the aim of advancing the project in the West Midlands.
As of 2011, the primary languages entitlement will become statutory, which will put pressure on primary schools in the region. The aim of the upskilling programme is to help teachers brush up their language skills and attain a level where they can comfortably teach languages throughout KS2. The aim is that by 2014 Languages will be taught from Y3-Y6 with a smooth progression to KS3. Links into Languages offers support for progression within KS2 and transition.
The discussion at the meeting was vivid. A West Midlands taskforce was established to build a sustainable upskilling programme for the West Midlands region. This will consist of different models, including online tutorials and residential courses.
