The National Director for Languages, Dr Lid King, in conjunction with Links into Languages and Carmel O'Hagan from CILT hosted a meeting to discuss Upskilling for the Primary Workforce and how courses could be developed in a more coherent and coordinated fashion. Present were representatives from Yorkshire & The Humber Local Authorities, Higher Education and Adult Education Institutions, Cultural Agencies and Specialist Language Colleges.
Working with CILT, the National Centre for Languages and national experts from HE and the Primary sector the National Director has overseen the development of a Language Upskilling Specification which will be the basis for the development of upskilling courses for primary teachers. The specification has been designed to respond to the broad needs of adult language learners but it includes many contexts specific to teaching and learning in primary schools. It will enable primary teachers and teaching assistants to develop as independent language users with a target competence between B1 and B2 on the Common European Framework Reference Levels. (This is equivalent to Higher GCSE-AS/A; Languages Ladder Intermediate to Advanced).
