Ten new Links professional development courses are now on offer in each of the regions. Written by nationally recognised experts and their development coordinated by SSAT, the courses address current priorities for languages and provide an innovative and inspiring programme.
The overall focus will be on raising achievement and increasing learners’ motivation. These courses will be relevant for all teachers and classroom assistants and will be delivered by a network of experienced trainers in the field.

Implications for leadership and management are a key focus for the day, particularly in relation to developing the role of the subject coordinator. Delegates will analyse different curriculum models enabling them to make better informed strategic decisions. There are activities to support language leaders when writing their Self-Evaluation Form (SEF). The course will also give you a wide range of opportunities to learn about the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages and its role at the heart of curriculum planning. Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 framework.

This course will allow teachers to work together to understand the guiding principles of integrating languages and other curriculum areas. Delegates will be given lots of practical examples of activities to use and resources to support planning integrated curricula. There will be opportunities to evaluate critically any current links that exist and to strengthen and develop these . Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 framework for languages.

This course will give teachers the opportunity to consider different views of progression in the primary setting and beyond. Delegates will be shown how the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages should be used as a progression tool and will discuss approaches to assessment against the framework expectations and outcomes. There will also be a sharp focus on the experience of Year 7 learners and their teachers and the potential impact of well managed transition. Understanding the context of the Key Stage 2 framework for languages and how it is structured is an essential part of preparing your school for statutory provision of languages in the curriculum. Having a good repertoire of teaching strategies and ideas that are rooted in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages is what most primary teachers want to develop.
Knowing how to approach teaching and learning in the strands of literacy, oracy and intercultural understanding is new territory for many teachers and the practical sessions of this course address this very clearly.

In Leading Languages, you will discover how to make the case for languages across the whole school and beyond! Special events and celebrations will be discussed and colleagues will share ideas which have worked for them. You will also have time to think about the key ways in which you can help colleagues in your department get the learning right, something which is so vital to recruit learners beyond Key Stage 3!

The course is very interactive and practical. Delegates will be given time to explore the principles of the New Secondary Curriculum and consider the implications for KS3 and KS4 curriculum design in languages. There will be practical examples from other schools and case studies for delegates to take back to school and disseminate and discuss with other colleagues in to facilitate departmental or whole-school developments. Teachers will be shown how the principles of innovative curriculum design are reflected in the Renewed Key Stage 3 Framework for Languages and in the revised GCSE criteria.

In its most recent report on Languages, Ofsted noted that there was still a need to develop a clear framework for ‘spontaneous’ use of the target language, as speaking remains an area in which many of our pupils struggle. If you are seeking new and exciting ways of promoting speaking work in your classroom or department, this is the course for you!

The renewed KS3 Framework for Languages gives a practical structure to help teachers to secure this progression and this course will allow teachers time to consider it in context, to discuss ideas with other colleagues and to return to school with a clear rationale for how and why the KS3 Framework for Languages should be used.

This course is important for all sixth form tutors, teachers, and course leaders. This course is divided into two modules. The first module explores the impact of the new A level, and will provide advice and toolkits for teaching to mixed audiences.
