School Children in group discussion in class

Summary

The course is very interactive and practical. Delegates will be given time to explore the principles of the New Secondary Curriculum and consider the implications for KS3 and KS4 curriculum design in languages. There will be practical examples from other schools and case studies for delegates to take back to school and disseminate and discuss with other colleagues in to facilitate departmental or whole-school developments. Teachers will be shown how the principles of innovative curriculum design are reflected in the Renewed Key Stage 3 Framework for Languages and in the revised GCSE criteria.

The course will help you to:

  • Understand the key concepts of the New Secondary Curriculum for languages
  • Make languages a more meaningful and stimulating learning experience for pupils, planned into the core of Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Consider implications for redesigning schemes of work, medium term planning and short term lesson planning
  • Think about the best teaching approaches to secure progression in the innovative secondary languages classroom
  • Find more ways to encourage pupils to use language independently and for a wide range of purposes
  • Redesign language learning at a deeper level to allow pupils to use cognitive skills at an appropriate level for their age
  • Develop your understanding of planning content around “meanings that matter” to young people and consider the practical implications of this
  • Evaluate your current curricular balance between skills and “topics”
  • Drive substantial organisational change to raise the status of languages in your school’s curriculum
