Summary
This workshop will focus on teaching Germany’s past as a divided nation and on the ongoing social challenges in unified Germany with particular reference to the portrayal of this aspect of German history and society in film. The main focus will be on Wolfgang Becker’s “Goodbye Lenin!”, a very popular film widely used in teaching and readily available in the UK. This will be supplemented with a look at extracts of other feature films and short fictional texts dealing with this topic from different perspectives.
Outcomes
Issues discussed will include:
- Life in the GDR (including the role of the Stasi)
- The process of reunification - After the fall of Wall: the adjustment process in the east and in the west
- 20 years on: Still a divided nation?
Activities will include:
- an introduction to film language in German
- a variety of exercises using film - an overview of available teaching aids and materials
- suggestions for creative activities (e.g. role plays, marketing east German products, “design your own Trabi” competition)

Trainer
Dr Claudia Gremler is lecturer in German at Aston University. She holds a teaching degree from the University of Göttingen and has wide ranging experience in teaching at various levels, including GCSE and A Level. Her first appointment in the UK was as Lektorin for the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). Claudia has been involved in various teacher training events and has taught on the Young, Gifted and Talented (YGT) programme.
German Contemporary Film is one of Claudia’s main research interests and she has published several articles in this field.
