Summary
This course will allow teachers to work together to understand the guiding principles of integrating languages and other curriculum areas. Delegates will be given lots of practical examples of activities to use and resources to support planning integrated curricula. There will be opportunities to evaluate critically any current links that exist and to strengthen and develop these . Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 framework for languages.
The course will help you to:
- Develop your own understanding of what an integrated curriculum could look like for teachers and feel like for learners
- Make the case for languages having a central role in an integrated and creative curriculum
- Find practical ways of working across the curriculum to avoid languages being a “bolt-on” part of the programme
- Understand why the class teacher is better placed than a specialist to lead language learning in the classroom
- Consider the practical implications for planning an integrated curriculum
- Explore the most useful teaching approaches to support integrated learning
- Use practical strategies to use language learning that requires pupils to use higher order thinking skills
- Appreciate the importance of an integrated curriculum for engaging pupils and sustaining their progression and motivation through and beyond Key Stage 2
- Understand the basic principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

- Class teachers who teach Key Stage 2 languages
- Key Stage 2 curriculum leaders, e.g. deputy heads
- Subject coordinators for languages
- Subject coordinators for other curriculum areas
- Curriculum governors for primary schools
Programme
Each participant will receive a USB stick containing all the course materials including Powerpoints and a variety of resources which can be used to disseminate training to colleagues.

Trainer: Mrs Wendy Adeniji
This course will be delivered by Wendy Adeniji. Wendy taught French, Spanish and German for 10 years and now works as a trainer and consultant. She is the lead tutor for the CILT Graduate Teacher Programme in Leeds and regularly delivers MFL-specific interactive whiteboard training in schools. She has also acted as a consultant for the BBC digital curriculum, is the ICT consultant for Comenius Yorkshire and the Humber and has recently acted as consultant for a KS3 Strategy project relating to how interactive whiteboards can improve learning modern languages. She is the MFL moderator for the Ngfl Teacher Resource Exchange and writes regularly for the TES on matters relating to MFL.
Cost
- In order to cover our direct costs, e.g. catering and guest speaker expenses, we charge £50 to attend this event.
- Refreshments will be provided.
