P03 Planning progression and transition within and across key stages

Date: February 5, 2010
Location: Anglia Ruskin University
Event type: Workshop

Summary

This course will give teachers the opportunity to consider different views of progression in the primary setting and beyond. Delegates will be shown how the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages should be used as a progression tool and will discuss approaches to assessment against the framework expectations and outcomes. There will also be a sharp focus on the experience of Year 7 learners and their teachers and the potential impact of well managed transition. Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 or 3 framework.

The course will help you to:

  • Consider your own view of progression and how you share that with secondary partners
  • Understand the importance of planning for skills development rather than topic “coverage”
  • Use the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages to secure progression for pupils
  • Understand and use Language Ladder grades and descriptors to build stronger assessment for learning in the primary languages classroom
  • Use practical strategies to develop self-assessment and other features of assessment for learning e.g. the Junior European Languages Portfolio
  • Use free, downloadable materials to gather evidence of progression across Key Stage 2
  • Consider what information needs to be shared with secondary partners and how this is best managed
  • Understand the implications of good transition on accelerated progress through Key Stage 3 and beyond
  • Use your LA networks to strengthen transition

Target audience

  • Teachers of Key Stage 2 and/or Key Stage 3 languages
  • Chairs of governors/curriculum governors for primary schools
  • Key Stage 2 curriculum leaders, e.g. deputy heads
  • Teachers responsible for Key Stage 2-3 transition in languages
