In its most recent report on Languages, Ofsted noted that there was still a need to develop a clear framework for ‘spontaneous’ use of the target language, as speaking remains an area in which many of our pupils struggle. If you are seeking new and exciting ways of promoting speaking work in your classroom or department, this is the course for you!
In the first module you will learn how to harness digital technology to develop oral interaction. This practical, hands-on session will allow you to create dynamic, audiovisual resources to use with pupils the very next day, and show you how to make the best use of a variety of programs to help pupils improve their speaking skills. Comprehensive delegate notes will provide you with clear, step-by-step instructions to help you use technology to improve pupils’ pronunciation, confidence and engagement when speaking. The use of Audacity, PowerPoint and Vokis will be demonstrated as these can promote creativity, collaboration and personalisation in speaking work, while their role in promoting international links will be considered.
In Module Two, ‘Developing Pupil Speaking Skills’, a different approach to traditional speaking activities will be introduced and practised. The Group Talk project, winner of a European Award for Languages in 2008, demonstrates how pupils can quickly become confident when speaking in small groups, using spontaneous responses, colloquial language, opinions, conjecture and debate. The four stages of Group Talk will be thoroughly explained and video clips will demonstrate how it can work in a real classroom environment. Practical sessions will show you how it can be used and you will consider how to implement and extend the use of Group Talk in departments.
With the focus of the day firmly on practical, tried and tested strategies, you will leave with a wide range of ideas to help your pupils becoming more motivated and confident when speaking, which could lead to improved attainment at GCSE.
