The seminar will be led by Professor Rosamond Mitchell, University of Southampton and
Bernardette Holmes, University of Cambridge Language Centre, Links East Regional Manager.
Links East is proud to announce the first in a series of research seminars to be held at
Churchill College, focusing on language learning and teaching, policy and practice. The seminar will be relevant to all those with an interest in the future of primary languages and will provide an opportunity for classroom teachers and languages advisers to meet with colleagues from the region's universities and from Initial Teacher Education.
In this seminar, we will be responding to the findings of the recently published research report commissioned by the DCSF, Languages Learning at Key Stage 2 - A Longitudinal Study, Cable et al January 2010. The report follows a qualitative study of a sample of 40 primary schools which took place over three school years between 2006-2007 and 2008-2009. It offers insights into the nature of children's achievement in language learning and explores developments in curriculum provision and classroom teaching. We will draw particular attention to literacy, intercultural understanding, cross-curricular links and progression. The format will include a presentation of key findings followed by structured discussion, interaction and reflection. We hope that participation in the seminar will be the first step to continued engagement with Links East through our network.
The formal part of the seminar will last for 3 hours from 10:00 until 13:00. Those who would like to remain for further discussion and to exchange ideas are warmly welcomed to do so. We will reconvene in the Bevin room after lunch from 14:00-16:00.
