Summary

Building an integrated approach allows teachers and pupils to explore learning in an innovative, creative and challenging way. It also gives pupils real purpose to their learning which is not only highly motivating but can boost achievement and improve behaviour. The integrated approach also enables gifted and talented learners to demonstrate learning at higher levels without being restricted by a developing grasp of the language taught.

There are three modules in this course:

  1. Practical theory
  2. Whole curriculum
  3. Joining the pieces

This course will allow teachers to work together to understand the guiding principles of integrating languages and other curriculum areas, particularly literacy. Delegates will be given lots of practical examples of activities to use and resources to support planning integrated curricula. There will be opportunities to evaluate critically any current links that exist and to strengthen and develop these. Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 framework for languages.

The course will help you to:

  • Develop your own understanding of what a revised, more integrated curriculum could look like for teachers and feel like for learners
  • Make the case for languages having a central role in an integrated and creative curriculum
  • Find practical ways of working across the curriculum to avoid languages being a “bolt-on” part of the programme
  • Understand why the class teacher is better placed than a specialist to lead language learning in the classroom
  • Consider the practical implications for planning an integrated curriculum
  • Explore the most useful teaching approaches to support integrated learning
  • Appreciate the importance of an integrated curriculum for engaging pupils and sustaining their progression and motivation through and beyond Key Stage 2
  • Understand the basic principles of Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL)

Target audience

  • Class teachers who teach Key Stage 2 languages
  • Key Stage 2 curriculum leaders, e.g. deputy heads
  • Subject coordinators for languages
  • Subject coordinators for other curriculum areas
