Secondary classroom

Summary

This course aims to help delegates to explore curriculum design in languages from a number of different, but related, angles, and clarify what kind of changes they would like to make at school through considering some examples of successful practice. Delegates will have the opportunity to share and discuss their ideas with colleagues.

There are three modules in this course:

  1. Meaningful contexts, meaningful learning
  2. Skilling up for linguistic independence
  3. Spreading wings, raising expectations

The first module looks at a number of cross curriculum approaches including examples of links with art, history and business & enterprise. The second module examines developing thinking skills with a clear language purpose including PLTs, memorisation skills and mind mapping. The third module looks at Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL),and other classroom strategies for languages.

The course will help you to:

  • Understand the key concepts of the New Secondary Curriculum for languages
  • Make languages a more meaningful and stimulating learning experience for pupils, planned into the core of Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Consider implications for redesigning schemes of work, medium term planning and short term lesson planning
  • Think about the best teaching approaches to secure progression in the innovative secondary languages classroom
  • Redesign language learning at a deeper level to allow pupils to use cognitive skills at an appropriate level for their age
  • Evaluate your current curricular balance between skills and “topics”
  • Drive substantial organisational change to raise the status of languages in your school’s curriculum

Target audience

  • Any teacher who teaches Key Stage 3 and/or Key Stage 4 languages
  • Heads of Languages Departments
  • Heads of other subject areas
  • Senior curriculum leaders e.g. assistant heads, deputy heads
