Summary
Schools are expected to teach languages as part of the primary curriculum. In order to plan this into the school curriculum effectively and with maximum benefit for pupils it is essential to understand the wider context of Key Stage 2 languages. Understanding how and why Primary Languages have been developed nationally enables school leaders to make good local responses to providing entitlement to primary languages.
There are two modules in this course:
- Developing the strategic role of the subject coordinator and the classroom teacher
- Self evaluation: monitoring impact and building capacity in languages
Implications for leadership and management are a key focus for the day, particularly in relation to developing the role of the subject coordinator. Delegates will analyse different curriculum models enabling them to make better informed strategic decisions about implementation in their own settings. There are activities to support curriculum leaders when completing the revised Self Evaluation Form (SEF). The course will also give you a wide range of opportunities to learn about the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages and its role at the heart of curriculum planning. Delegates will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 framework.
The course will help you to:
- Support languages coordinators and provide them with a clearly defined set of roles and responsibilities
- Understand the context of Primary Languages curriculum development, its place within the wider primary curriculum, and its current review and development
- Reflect on curriculum models for teaching and learning in languages and discuss the pros and cons of different approaches
- Understand the expectations and outcomes of the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages
- Prepare for Ofsted inspections under the new framework and/or subject surveys
- Reflect your developments in Primary Languages through the SEF
- Use documentation to improve your school’s own self evaluation processes in languages

- Teachers responsible for curricular planning and provision for languages and/or literacy
- Classroom teachers
- Teachers responsible for Key Stage 2-3 transition in languages
Trainer: Mrs. Gill West
This course will be delivered by Gill West. Having taught French and German and led Languages departments in a variety of secondary schools, Gill went on to work as a consultant for Leicestershire L A where she managed the Primary Languages Strategy and trained as an Ofsted inspector. She was Regional Manager of Comenius East Midlands, Coordinator of the Leicestershire Local Support Group for Primary Languages and managed the Key Stage 3 MFL Dissemination and Development Programme in the East Midlands. Gill is a National Trainer on the Key Stage 2 Framework and is currently working as an independent consultant, providing bespoke training and carrying out local authority and departmental reviews.
