Summary

Understanding the context of the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages and how it is structured is an essential part of preparing your school for statutory provision of languages in the curriculum. Having a good repertoire of teaching strategies and ideas that are rooted in the Key Stage 2 Framework for Languages is what most primary teachers want to develop.
Knowing how to approach teaching and learning in the strands of literacy, oracy and intercultural understanding is new territory for many teachers and the practical sessions of this course address this very clearly.

There are three modules in this course:

  1. Innovative classroom strategies
  2. Methodology in literacy (reading and writing) and oracy (listening and speaking)
  3. Intercultural understanding: Exploring the strand

The course is very interactive and practical. You will not be required to have any prior knowledge of the Key Stage 2 Framework.

The course will help you to:

  • Understand why the Key Stage 2 framework is an essential tool for improving lesson planning and planning schemes of work
  • Understand how the Key Stage 2 framework is structured
  • Understand the expectations and outcomes of the literacy and oracy strands for all years in Key Stage 2
  • Understand the expectations and outcomes of the intercultural understanding strand for all years in Key Stage 2
  • Use a wide range of teaching activities to secure progression in the literacy, oracy and intercultural understanding strands
  • Know how to use the online Primary Training Zone and its media library
  • Explore how the Key Stage 2 framework fits into the wider context of the National Curriculum Programme of Study for Languages, primary curriculum review and the Key Stage 3 Framework for Langugaes.

  • Key Stage 2 curriculum leaders, e.g. deputy heads
  • Teachers responsible for Key Stage 2-3 transition in languages

Trainer: Mrs. Catherine Cheater

This course will be delivered by Catherine Cheater. Catherine is an acknowledged national expert in early language learning. She has experience in teaching languages to all age groups from nursery to A-Level, and has been involved in advisory work since the 1990s. Formerly Senior Language Teaching Adviser at CILT, The National Centre for Languages, she has co-written two CILT Young Pathfinders: YP6 Let’s Join In! and YP9 The Literacy Link. She is the author of The Catherine Cheater Scheme of Work for French published by Golden Daffodils Ltd. In 2004 she was made Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques in recognition of her contribution to the teaching of French in primary schools in the UK.

Cost
