Summary
In its most recent report on languages, Ofsted noted that there was still a need to develop a clear framework for ‘spontaneous’ use of the target language, as speaking remains an area in which many of our pupils struggle. With the focus of the day firmly on practical, tried and tested strategies, you will leave with a wide range of ideas to help your pupils becoming more motivated and confident when speaking, which could lead to improved attainment at GCSE.
There are two modules to this course:
- How to harness digital technology to develop oral interaction
- Developing pupil speaking skills
Practical sessions will show you how Group Talk can be used and how to implement and extend the use of Group Talk in departments. This includes a Scheme of Work for Group Talk and posters for the classroom to support this work.
The course will help you to:
- Harness digital technology to develop oral interaction and improve pupils’ pronunciation, confidence and engagement when speaking
- Create dynamic, audiovisual resources to use with pupils the very next day
- Use a variety of programs to help pupils improve their speaking skills, including Audacity, PowerPoint and Vokis, which promote creativity, collaboration and personalisation in speaking work
- Understand the four stages of Group Talk and how it can work in a real classroom environment
- See how pupils can quickly become confident when speaking in small groups, using spontaneous responses, colloquial language, opinions, conjecture and debate when using Group Talk
Target audience
- Any teacher who teaches Key Stage 3 and/or Key Stage 4 languages
- Subject leaders
- Heads of Languages Departments
- Heads of other subject areas

Cost
- In order to cover our direct costs, e.g. catering and speaker expenses, we charge £50 to attend this event.
- Lunch and take-home resources will be provided.
