The Primary curriculum is full and Primary teachers are busy - integrating languages into other curriculum areas can help this curriculum overload and inject language learning with new meaning. Whether you want to try integrating languages into class routines or whole school assemblies, into short lesson warm-ups or whole lessons with another curriculum area - this course is full of ideas for imaginative teaching.
You will:
| 13.00 - 13.15 | Registration and coffee |
| 13.15 - 13.30 | Welcome words |
| 13.30-15.30 | Pippa Jacobs - integrating languages |
| 15.30 - 16.00 | Questions and close |
Pippa Jacobs' roots are in primary teaching, and she has had many years experience teaching both KS1 and KS2 before becoming a primary languages specialist. She has also been involved in a nationwide project led by the TDA on integrated language teaching. Pippa is a language coach for a number of Oxfordshire primary schools and has trained both teachers and student teachers. She is an associate tutor for Oxford Brookes. Having a truly "all round" primary backgroundmeans that although teaching languages is her passion, she also understands the importance of all subjects on the primary curriculum, as well as the pressures that can be brought to bear on primary class teachers when a new initiative is introduced. Integrating language and content is a very creative way to resolve some of these pressures, whilst also acknowledging the value of discrete language lessons.
